Veterans learn about civilian job options at Hiring Our Heroes event - Friday, January 27, 2012

On January 26, veterans visited the Army Processing Facility at England Airpark for Cenla’s Hire Our Heroes Job Fair. The event was one of about 100 Hiring Our Heroes events being held across the country in a U.S. Chamber of Commerce initiative, co-sponsored locally by the Central Louisiana Chamber of Commerce. 92 employers participated. Multiple organizers described hiring a veteran as a "win-win proposition" where the veteran gets a job and the employer gets a quality employee and access to federal tax credits. Full article

Woodworth fire rating improves - Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Outdoors program for women registration begins Jan 23 - Tuesday, January 24, 2012

The LA Dept of Wildlife and Fisheries will sponsor a "Becoming an Outdoors-Woman" workshop March 23-25 in Central LA at Camp Grant Walker in Pollock. The program cost is $170, and covers classes, program material, lodging, meals, etc. Some of the program subjects include shotgun, rifle, handguns, fly-fishing, kayaking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, compass skills, and outdoor photography.  Full article.

Souper Bowl of Caring - Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Cenla residents have the opportunity to participate in a national movement through the Souper Bowl of Caring. This movement is comprised of youth working to fight hunger and hunger and poverty in Cenla around the Super Bowl football game. Pineville to get new housing for senior citizens - Monday, January 23, 2012

Pineville will get a new housing development for senior citizens. The project, located on Shamrock Street is expected to take eleven months. Humanities Foundation, based in Mount Pleasant, S.C., will develop the project, along with commercial real estate developer James Doran Co. The development will feature one and two bedroom units, and will be available to residents 55 or older, with restricted incomes. Full article.

 
Principals have concerns regarding Jindal's K-12 plan - Monday, January 23, 2012

After Gov. Bobby Jindal presented his proposal for K-12 education reform, some area principals have concerns about the plan. The group's concern centered on value-added assessments for teachers and vouchers for students. Historic church building preservation project - Friday, January 20, 2012

Steps to preserve the historic building that formerly housed Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in downtown Alexandria are underway by its current owner, Jim Hurst. Hurst purchased the property some eighteen months ago, and considered using the location for a restaurant, but recently indicated that for now he will just maintain the building and make sure it isn't destroyed while considering his options. LA approves biofuels plant initial funding - Friday, January 20, 2012

LA’s Bond Commission recently gave preliminary approval to the funding plan for Sundrop Fuels’ green gasoline facility in Rapides Parish. Full production should begin in 2015, with a smaller pilot plant running in 2013. Plant salaries should average between $55,000 to $60,000. The company also is eligible for tax breaks under the state's Quality Jobs Program.  Full article.

LA ranks 15th nationally in animal protection - Friday, January 20, 2012

A new report from the Humane Society of the United States indicates that Louisiana, Florida and Maryland are ranked No. 15 nationwide for animal protection. The report assessed ten categories, including animal fighting, animal cruelty, wildlife abuse, exotic pets, companion animals, animal research, farm animals, fur trapping, puppy mills and equine protection.  Full article.

 

 
Cancer screening van to stop in Vernon Parish - Friday, January 20, 2012

The Cenla Medication Access Program’s cancer screening van will visit Leesville on Feb. 7-8. Screenings offered to Vernon Parish residents will include colorectal, breast and cervical cancers. Spagnuolo gets Saints’ defense coordinator job - Friday, January 20, 2012

Steve Spagnuolo, former coach for the St. Louis Rams, recently s agreed to take over as defensive coordinator for with the Saints. Before going to St. Louis, Spagnuolo had top 10 defenses with the Giants in the 2007 and 2008 seasons. Fracking Market expected to grow nineteen percent in 2012 - Friday, January 20, 2012

Fracking is the practice of pumping millions of gallons of high-pressure water, chemicals and sand underground to crack fissures in the rock so oil and gas can flow, and North America accounts for 87% of the fracking market. Spears & Associates Inc., a Tulsa-based firm that advises about 400 oil producers, hedge funds, equipment providers and manufacturers, recently expects the worldwide market for hydraulic fracturing to grow 19% this year, to a record $37 billion. Apple's senior vice president for worldwide marketing recently unveiled iBook's 2, Apple’s new digital textbooks experience. Apple also announced iBooks Author, a free tool to help authors create and publish digital textbooks, and a new iTunes U program with a new app that lets professors create full online courses. LA coastal plan: 5 decades, $50 billion - Thursday, January 19, 2012

A proposed new master plan that calls for restoring eroded wetlands, shorelines, headlands and barrier islands that once provided protection from storms is one that can protect the state from further ruin. A new law requires motorists in the left lanes of four-lane highways to move to the right in certain situations. The left lanes are only for passing. Saints Coach Sean Payton recently indicated that free agency will be challenging for the Saints, but said that the idea of Drew Brees leaving the team is “far fetched.” Other key free agents include cornerback Tracy Porter, receiver Robert Meachem, defensive tackles Aubrayo Franklin and Shaun Rogers, and linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar. Vernon Parish School District makes progress on literacy grant - Wednesday, January 18, 2012

School board officials recently announced that the Vernon Parish School District made it through the first round of cuts for a state literacy grant. The board started the application process for the second round. Toledo Bend water deal opposition grows - Wednesday, January 11, 2012

There's a growing backlash to a proposed contract to sell water from the Toledo Bend Reservoir to a private company in Texas; more than five hundred people have submitted complaints about the project. LA could see additional revenue, jobs, and market prospects from export opportunities - Wednesday, January 11, 2012

In the world of natural gas exports, LA is emerging as the biggest player. The expanded harvesting of shale formations led to an oversupply of natural gas, making exports more attractive. Cheniere Energy, which owns the Sabine Pass Terminal in Cameron Parish, received the go-ahead from the U.S. Dept of Energy to export liquefied natural gas to any company not prohibited by law. This ruling makes Sabine Pass, the first bidirectional LNG facility in the country, capable of importing and exporting the super-chilled liquid.  Full article

State to assist Sundrop with plant project - Friday, January 06, 2012

CLEDA Funding Reflects Community Support - Wednesday, September 28, 2011

CLEDA—the Central Louisiana Economic Development Alliance—has received commitments for more than $700,000 in first year funding from Central Louisiana businesses and institutions.
 
Blake Chatelain, President and CEO of Red River Bank and the Chairman of CLEDA’s Fundraising Steering Committee, made the announcement at the organization’s first public meeting since the completion of the non-profit merger that created CLEDA in May. “We are very gratified at the early commitments made by the organizing members of our team,” said Chatelain.
 
A grant from the Rapides Foundation that matches commitments from the private sector is now above $300,000 and will continue to grow as new pledges come in. Pineville-based Cleco leads businesses with a three-year commitment of $100,000 per year. Rapides Regional Medical Center is contributing $50,000 per year and Christus Cabrini and Central Louisiana Surgical Hospital have each committed to $25,000 per year.
 
All told, CLEDA has commitments for contributions that are approaching the $2 million level over the next three years, according to Chatelain.
 
CLEDA President and CEO Jim Clinton said that existing grants and contracts move the total commitments to about $2.5 million.
